Discovering Gold

Use your imagination!

Suppose you are out for a walk through a field. It is a field that you have walked through many times before. But on this day, as you walk through the grass, you trip over something and fall. As you begin to pick yourself up, your eye catches a glint in the dry grass. You look at it closer and with your hand, begin to move the grass back and forth then side to side. To your astonishment and amazement, the glint just seems to be everywhere! You discover that there is gold hiding under the dried grass. You have just discovered a field of gold! With great excitement you hurriedly devise a plan. You go and sell everything that you own in order to purchase that field at fair market value. You have made a discovery that is known only to you. Your life will never be the same. What a day! One moment you are just trudging along and in the next moment your whole world has changed forever! Jesus said, “The kingdom of heaven is like a treasure hidden in the field, which a man found... and for joy over it he goes and sells all that he has, and buys that field” (Matthew 13:44*).

Jesus tells us that the field in question is the world. People have walked through this world every day for centuries, but they haven’t found the gold hidden in the grass. So let’s ask the question—What do you see when you look out at the people of the world?
  • Do you see their size? They are both big and small.

  • Do you see their color? There is much ethnic diversity.

  • Do you see their busyness? They are coming and going.

  • Do you see their work ethic? Some are industrious and some are lazy.

  • Do you see their mistakes? They have failings and shortcomings.

  • Do you see their fears? Their confusion? Their hurts? Their tears? Their smiles? Their joy? Their success? Their pride? Their intelligence? Their foolishness? It is all pretty hard to miss isn’t it?
But the real question is this—in your observation of all that you see, do you see any gold in the grass? Do you see their value, hidden away in the heart? It is really easy to miss!

But that is precisely what Jesus saw! And like the pilgrim in the parable, our Lord, upon viewing our hidden value (and seeing what no other eye had ever seen), gave His all, paid the price, and purchased the field. And He did it with great joy! [“And for the joy set before Him, He endured the cross, despising the shame...(Hebrews 12:2*). “For God so loved the world, He gave His only begotten Son (His Everything)... John 3:16*).] He saw the value and the worth of the human soul. He saw the gold hidden in you and in me! Aren’t you glad for what He saw and for what He did about it? May God help us all to see the world with His eyes!

The next time you are out for a walk, keep your eyes open! You never know what you might find. Anybody seen my walking shoes?
